Dopo la vittoria dei Memphis Grizzlies per 103-93 in Gara 2, che li ha portati a pareggiare la serie per 1-1 contro i Los Angeles Lakers, Dillon Brooks ha preso di mira LeBron James, mettendo in dubbio l’efficacia del veterano in questa fase della sua carriera.
“Andiamo… è vecchio. Capisce cosa intendo?” aveva dichiarato Brooks mercoledì, dopo aver visto LeBron realizzare una tripla nel quarto quarto della partita. “Mi aspettavo che lo facesse in Gara 4 o 5. Voleva dire qualcosa quando ho subito il quarto fallo. Ma avrebbe dovuto dirlo prima”.
Forse, però, quello che Brooks non sa è che LeBron può chiaramente ancora arrivare dove vuole. Anche a 38 anni, con 20 stagioni sulle spalle.
Basta guardarlo quando gioca. O quando scansa un’occasione dopo l’altra per rispondere alle provocazioni di Brooks.
James ha evitato di rispondergli direttamente, o di rispondere a domande anche solo vagamente riguardanti il fastidioso 27enne, prima di chiudere la sua intervista post partita.
I Lakers sembravano quasi sapere che, qualsiasi cosa fosse stata detta mercoledì sera, avrebbe avuto poco effetto sulla partita di questa notte, la prima partita casalinga dei Lakers nei playoffs con un pubblico particolarmente numeroso.
LeBron lascerà che sia il suo gioco a parlare, in Gara 3. Anzi, aveva addirittura detto di non aver sentito che commenti avesse fatto Brooks, almeno fino a quando un giornalista non gli ha chiesto di parlarne.
E, quando gli è stato anche chiesto se ha mai partecipato ad una serie di playoffs con un risultato che si basava sul successo del proprio trash talk, LeBron ne ha minimizzato l’importanza.
“Non voglio parlarne ancora. Abbiamo una grande partita da giocare” ha detto LeBron dopo l’allenamento di ieri, interrompendo la sua disponibilità con i media dopo aver cercato di evitare le domande su Brooks per 5 minuti di fila, battendo le mani come un croupier di blackjack che lascia il tavolo. “Non sono qui per le stron**te. Voglio giocare e basta. Va bene?”.
Tra i suoi compagni di squadra, Rui Hachimura ha dichiarato che i commenti di Brooks dimostrano tutta l’immaturità dei Grizzlies.
“Ho sentito parlare di ciò che è successo” ha detto. “Non sono molto appassionato di social media, ma ne ho sentito parlare. Onestamente, è tutto ciò che possono fare. Sono una squadra giovane. Vogliono solo parlare. A noi non interessa. Faremo il nostro e cercheremo di vincere”.
Anche il capo allenatore dei Lakers, coach Darvin Ham, si è detto fiducioso che James non si lascerà turbare in alcun modo, in vista della partita di questa notte.
“LeBron deve solo fare quello che ha sempre fatto” ha detto il coach. “Deve solo giocare nel modo giusto. Tutto il resto si prenderà cura di sé”.
Le squadre in cui LeBron ha giocato vantano un record pari a 10 vittorie e 3 sconfitte contro le squadre in cui ha giocato Brooks. Il punteggio più alto registrato da LeBron in queste partite è pari a 34 punti, mentre la media dice: 25.2 punti, con il 52.2% di realizzazione al tiro. Nelle prime due partite di questa serie, LeBron ha invece registrato una media di 24.5 punti ed 11.5 rimbalzi, con il 51.3% di realizzazione al tiro.
Ma i Lakers dovranno mostrare la versione migliore di sé rispetto a Gara 2, e questo miglioramento può iniziare solo da Anthony Davis.
Il centro ha segnato solo 13 punti in Gara 2, il suo terzo minor numero di punti segnati in una partita di playoffs, dopo le due partite del primo turno di post season del 2021, cui non ha più preso parte a causa di un infortunio.
Far sì che si riprenda è una delle priorità dei Lakers per Gara 3.
“Dobbiamo tutti fare un lavoro migliore, per aiutarci a vicenda” sostiene LeBron. “Soprattutto con AD, dobbiamo fargli arrivare la palla nelle posizioni più comode per lui, quando c’è più tempo sul cronometro”.
