“Se devo essere onesto, ho più in comune con gli spettatori seduti in tribuna in una partita NBA che con i giocatori in campo” Kyle Korver sintetizza così, in un lungo pezzo pubblicato su The Players Tribune, la persistenza della forma mentis razzista nella società americana moderna, anche in un contesto ed in un mondo – quello del basket USA professionistico – a prevalenza nera.
Korver, oggi agli Utah Jazz e veterano con alle spalle 18 stagioni NBA e 5 squadre diverse, analizza la sua posizione di “uomo bianco” in una lega sportiva a maggioranza nera, ed i recenti e sgradevolissimi episodi di intolleranza razzista avvenuti nella sua Salt Lake City, ed altrove nelle arene della altre 29 squadre NBA.
La lite tra Russell Westbrook e Shane Keisel, tifoso dei Jazz che durante una partita tra Oklahoma City Thunder e Utah aveva apostrofato Westbrook con un insulto razzista, ha messo in evidenza quello che Korver definisce “l’elefante nella stanza” della società americana, e per riflesso, tra campo e tribune.
Kyle Korver: “La mia posizione è quella del privilegiato tra i miei colleghi”
L’ex giocatore di 76ers, Bulls e Hawks richiama alla memoria l’incidente di Salt Lake City, e l’arresto dell’allora compagno di squadra ad Atlanta Thabo Sefolosha a New York la notte tra l’8 e d il 9 aprile 2015, per riflettere sulla condizione “privilegiata” dei bianchi in America. L’unica etnia, l’unico “colore” a godere del beneficio del dubbio in una società multietnica.
Sefolosha – ricorda Korver – venne arrestato e maltrattato da alcuni agenti del NYPD all’esterno di un locale. La colluttazione con gli agenti provocò al’ex giocatore dell’Angelico Biella una frattura della tibia della gamba destra. Mesi dopo l’incidente, a cui seguirono indagini ed un processo, Sefolosha fu sollevato da qualsiasi responsabilità, sentenza che mise in evidenza “l’eccesso di zelo” degli agenti nelle operazioni di controllo, ed impose un risarcimento al giocatore.
Secondo Korver, “Sarebbe stato impossibile per una ragazzo come Thabo, personalità NBA atipica, professionista modello e uomo ‘di mondo’, mettersi nei guai in quel modo“. Il tiratore dei Jazz ricorda con imbarazzo di aver pensato: “Se al suo posto (di Sefolosha, ndr) ci fossi stato io, la polizia non mi avrebbe mai arrestato, a meno che non avesse avuto un motivo valido per farlo“.

Una reazione che Korver rivela di aver di nuovo provato dopo aver saputo i dettagli della lite tra Westbrook e Keisel a Salt Lake City: “(Dopo la notizia, ndr) tenemmo un incontro alla presenza del presidente della squadra, ed i miei compagni confessarono i tanti episodi simili (a quelli di Westbrook, ndr) a loro capitati in tanti anni di NBA e basket scolastico. Una degradazione di un livello davvero difficile da sopportare, ben oltre il normale astio dei tifosi avversari (…) i miei compagni si sentivamo delusi, imbarazzati e a disagio, ma soprattutto non più disposti ad accettare un trattamento simile“.

I racconti dei compagni di squadra, prosegue Korver, hanno permesso al prodotto di Creighton di realizzare quanto sia tangibile la barriera che separa lui ed i suoi colleghi bianchi dai giocatori neri, quale che sia il suo atteggiamento, il suo pensiero: “Potrei – come ho fatto – dare tutto il mio supporto a Russ (Westbrook, ndr). Potrei raccontare in giro di come avrei votato Barack Obama per un terzo mandato, condannare ogni singolo atto di intolleranza nel quale mi fosse mai capitato di imbattermi…“.
“…Ma in ogni momento potrei comunque nascondere la mia faccia in mezzo alla folla, mischiarmi agli intolleranti sera dopo sera, tranquillamente. Gioco con e contro ragazzi di ogni colore, ma assomiglio più ad uno di quelli, che mi piaccia o meno. La mia posizione è quella del privilegiato che può scegliere da che parte stare, ma che potrebbe tirarsene indietro in qualunque momento“
Kyle Korver: “Io e quelli come me al riparo, Thabo e Russell no”
L’azione, l’impegno e la consapevolezza sono per Kyle Korver le armi per abbattere la barriera. La maturità necessaria per ascoltare storie come quelle raccontate dai suoi compagni e colleghi, la volontà di dare supporto e spazio persone meno privilegiate, senza quel “beneficio del dubbio”.
Il razzismo in America – presegue Korver – è un prodotto della responsabilità, storica e “semantica”, di una delle tante minoranze etniche della società USA: “E’ nostra responsabilità. Dobbiamo capire che per anni abbiamo usato questa parola – uguaglianza – ma ciò che intendevamo davvero era uguaglianza solo per alcune persone. Dobbiamo capire che abbiamo usato per anni la parola ‘diseguaglianza’, ma ciò che veramente intendevamo era ‘schiavismo’“.
“Ad un livello profondo” Continua Korver “L’America bianca e l’America nera sono ancora divise. Il trattamento non è lo stesso per tutti, e questa è una responsabilità storica. Quella sera, io sarei stato al sicuro come in un qualsiasi altro posto normalmente. Thabo (Sefolosha, bdr) no. Io ero al riparo quella sera a Salt Lake City, Westbrook non lo era“.

“Ed il razzismo più pernicioso è quello praticato in silenzio, lontano dagli occhi, praticato da quelle persone che in pubblico appaiono tolleranti ed amichevoli col prossimo, ma che in privato si lamentano ‘di tutta questa storia del razzismo’. E’ questa forma di razzismo latente la più pericolosa e profonda“
Individuare e denunciare gli atti di razzismo l’unica soluzione – nel pensiero di Korver – utile ad isolare e diminuire la frequenza di episodi come quelli denunciati da Westbrook e DeMarcus Cousins. “La NBA è una lega per il 75% nera. Gli americani neri hanno costruito questa lega, ne hanno fatto la fortuna, l’hanno trasformata in ciò che è oggi. La cosa migliore che possiamo fare è dunque tollerare questi episodi? Fare buon viso a cattivo gioco? No. La mia posizione quale giocatore NBA è peculiare: sono uno degli atleti NBA bianchi più riconoscibili, e questo mi ha fatto diventare – per taluni – un simbolo di qualcosa. Una visione distorta, a cui non presterei attenzione di solito. Ma non questa volta“.

Conclude così Kyle Korver:
“Ciò che accade agli americani neri nell’America del 2019 è sbagliato. E’ sbagliato che un maschio nero abbia una probabilità 5 volte maggiore di un maschio bianco di finire in galera. E’ sbagliato che un americano nero abbia una probabilità doppia di finire in povertà rispetto ad un americano bianco, e che il tasso di disoccupazione tra gli americano neri sia doppio rispetto alla media nazionale globale. O che le condanne per reati di droga siano 6 volte più alte per i neri rispetto a quelle per i bianchi, a parità di reato. E’ sbagliato che i nove decimi della ricchezza negli Stati Uniti siano detenuti dai bianchi“.
“Il fatto che tutto questo sia diventato una consuetudine così radicata ed accettata è sbagliato. Questo è ciò che penso, per cui, se alla partita volete indossare una mia maglia, se intendete regalare la mia maglia a qualcuno, se volete seguirmi sui social network, se volete tifare per me alle partite dei Jazz…”
