Sergio Scariolo è il pluri-medagliato head coach della nazionale spagnola. L’allenatore italiano (Brescia, 1 aprile 1961) si è distinto principalmente in terra iberica, dove probabilmente è stato più amato che in patria.
Si siede sulla panchina di Pesaro a soli 28 anni e vince subito il suo primo scudetto da capo allenatore. Si distingue anche in Coppa Korac, dove Pesaro viene sconfitta in finale dal Badalona. Nel 91 lascia Pesaro per andare a Desio, sta lì due anni e poi tre alla Fortitudo. Lasciata Bologna, incontra il suo grande amore cestistico: la Spagna.
Gira mezza penisola passando dal Baskonia, dove vince una Copa del Rey, al Real Madrid, dove vince il campionato, al Malaga, dove porta a casa entrambi. Il suo meglio lo dà sulla panchina della nazionale, con cui conquista due podi olimpici (un argento ed un bronzo) e ben tre ori europei su tre tentativi. Tra il 2008 ed il 2010 c’è la non esaltante parentesi col Khimki Mosca, conclusa con “zeru tituli”, ma non è l’unica per cui ha lasciato la Spagna.
Per ben due stagioni Scariolo è stato l’head coach dell’Olimpia Milano, con una buona prima stagione ed uno scudetto perso in finale contro Siena (con polemiche sull’assegnazione del titolo in seguito a quanto scoperto sulla Mens Sana).
L’amore però tra la piazza milanese e il coach bresciano non è mai sbocciato. A Scariolo venne data in mano tutta la squadra, operando praticamente come un manager, vista l’enorme fiducia riposta da Portaluppi in lui. A distanza di anni, tirando le somme, l’unica mossa positiva da ricordare è stata la mossa di prendere Melli e tenerselo stretto.
In campo, infatti, la squadra ero allo sbaraglio e per risposta criticava giocatori scelti da egli stesso, ragion per cui nonostante la finale giocata Milano non è mai stata veramente competitiva.
Dopo l’interruzione del contratto con la società meneghina, seguì per Scariolo l’ultima esperienza sulla panchina di una squadra di club, ovvero quella del Baskonia.
Nemmeno questa si rivelerà essere una buona annata per il coach italiano il quale guidò l’allora Saski al sesto posto in classifica e all’eliminazione per 2-0 nei quarti di finale contro il Barcellona poi campione.
Da qui torna a sedersi sulla panchina della Nazionale maggiore spagnola, dopo il triennio 2009-2012, il quale vide la vittoria di due ori europei ed un argento olimpico.
Nemmeno il tempo di tornare in Spagna e subito porta a casa l’oro agli Europei di Francia 2015 e il bronzo alle Olimpiadi di Rio de Janeiro.
Il feeling con le furie rosse è diverso, tutto sembra funzionare al meglio quando si siede su quella panchina e lo stesso Scariolo commenta così il rapporto tra lui e la Spagna: “A livello professionale mi sento spagnolo, mi identifico nel loro modo di intendere lo sport e non solo quello. Ora c’è la crisi, ma non si butta quel che hanno costruito negli ultimi venti anni. Il loro modo pratico di fare e pensare le cose, la praticità unita a un sistema che tenta di mettere al centro la persona. Tutte cose che torneranno a galla quando la crisi sarà finita. Sono nato a Brescia, ma quando penso a casa, è Marbella”.
La definitiva consacrazione, se così possiamo chiamarla, è arrivata quest’anno quando è stato nominato coordinatore tecnico della Federazione Spagnola in vista degli Europei di settembre.
Europei che, a sua detta, saranno i più difficili di sempre. La Spagna dovrà fare a meno, infatti, di Calderon, Vives, Fernandez e Reyes e la presenza di Navarro, il quale ha vissuto un’ultima annata a dir poco travagliata a causa degli infortuni, è ancora in dubbio.
Dalla sua però avrà Abrines e i fratelli Hernangomez reduci dall’esperienza NBA, con la squadra che sarà affidata di nuovo alle sapienti mani di Ricky Rubio.
I presupposti per presentarsi, ancora una volta, ai nastri di partenza come favoriti ci sono ma a prescindere da ciò una cosa è certa: Scariolo con la Spagna non delude mai.
