I Milwaukee Bucks, durante la regular season, sono stati in possesso del miglior record NBA. Hanno iniziato la postseason come favoriti alla vittoria dell’anello, eppure sono caduti di fronte ai Miami Heat in Gara 5 del primo turno dei playoffs, per 126-128.
Nessuna squadra con il miglior record aveva mai perso contro una serie piazzata all’ottavo posto della classifica NBA dal 2012, quando gli Chicago Bulls persero contro i Philadelphia 76ers, in seguito all’infortunio di Derrick Rose.
Nel quarto quarto della partita, Milwaukee si trovava sul +16, ma Miami si è gettata in quella che si è rivelata essere una rimonta sconvolgente, arrivando poi a vincere ai supplementari.
Tra il quarto quarto e i tempi supplementari, i Bucks hanno segnato solo 5 tiri su 25 dal campo, e hanno terminato con più palle perse (7) che tiri realizzati.
Nel frattempo, Jimmy Butler ha segnato il canestro di chiusura della partita a mezzo secondo dalla fine, concludendo la serie con una media di 37.6 punti (record di franchigia degli Heat), 6 rimbalzi e 4.8 assist, il tutto condito con un bel 59.7% di realizzazione al tiro.
Giannis Antetokounmpo ha avuto da ridire sull’approccio difensivo del suo team nei confronti di Butler, affermando che i Bucks avrebbero dovuto fare più aggiustamenti.
Infatti, i Bucks hanno raramente raddoppiato Butler, soltanto 7 volte nell’intera serie, di cui 4 solo in Gara 4.
E’ stato Jrue Holiday ad occuparsi principalmente di Butler durante la serie, mettendoglisi addosso per ben 244 volte, quasi 6 volte in più di qualsiasi altro giocatore della squadra, secondo quanto rilevato da Second Spectrum.
I Bucks hanno avuto un paio di opportunità di vincere la partita, in particolare grazie agli ultimi possessi nel quarto quarto e nei supplementari, ma il capo allenatore Mike Budenholzer ha scelto di non utilizzare i timeout che aveva a disposizione.
Il coach ha riconosciuto che avrebbe dovuto chiamare timeout dopo il tiro di Butler, ma non l’ha fatto nemmeno dell’ultimo possesso dei Bucks nei tempi supplementari. Infatti, i Bucks non hanno più tirato.
“È così che giochiamo sempre” ha detto coach Budenholzer dopo la partita. “È sempre stato positivo per noi, ma stasera non siamo riusciti a farcela”.
Giannis ha fatto un respiro profondo e si è passato le mani tra i capelli prima di commentare la sconfitta, in particolare per rispondere alla domanda riguardo l’ipotetico fallimento della stagione di Milwaukee.
“Non è un fallimento, sono piccoli passi verso il successo” sostiene. “Bisogna partire così. Michael Jordan ha giocato 15 anni e ha vinto 6 anelli. Gli altri 9 anni sono stati un fallimento? È questo che mi sta dicendo? È sbagliato, non esiste il fallimento nello sport. Ci sono giorni buoni e giorni che lo sono meno. Alcuni giorni si riesce ad avere successo, altri no. Alcuni giorni è il tuo turno, altri no. E questo lo sport. Non si vince sempre. Vincono anche gli altri. E quest’anno vincerà qualcun altro. E’ semplice”.
Tuttavia, il bruciore di un’altra eliminazione dalla postseason è ancora fresco per il greco. I Bucks hanno iniziato la stagione aspirando al campionato, ma ora sono costretti a cambiare i propri piani.
“Questa è la nostra peggiore postseason di sempre” ha detto. “La situazione è un po’ difficile da gestire”.
L’inaspettata eliminazione al primo turno dà infatti inizio a quella che potrebbe essere un’offseason pesantissima per Milwaukee.
Quest’estate Brook Lopez diventerà un unrestricted free agent. Khris Middleton ha una player option da 40 milioni di dollari per la prossima stagione, e bisogna tener conto che il roster del team è pieno di veterani. Infine, Giannis a settembre diventerà eleggibile per un’estensione contrattuale.
