Tutti conosciamo la passione per il gioco e le scommesse di Michael Jordan, portata avanti anche come proprietario degli Charlotte Hornets. Dopo molte stagioni nei bassifondi della lega, con poche e brutte apparizioni ai playoff, quest’anno gli Hornets hanno fatto all-in su LaMelo Ball. Il più giovane dei tre fratelli Ball, è stato scelto con la terza scelta assoluta nell’ultimo draft, e rappresenta una vera e propria scommessa per la ricostruzione della franchigia di Sua Altezza Aerea. Scopriamo cosa ci si può aspettare dagli Hornets nella preview 2020/2021.
Quella passata è stata una stagione transitoria, alla fine è arrivato il decimo posto e infatti niente post-season nella bolla di Orlando. Un’altra stagione, in termini di risultati fallimentari, archiviata. Orfani da qualche stagione del loro leader Kemba Walker, sono in cerca di nuova leadership e talento. Un possibile spiraglio di luce ha il nome di Devonte’ Graham. L’ex Kansas Jayhawks ha chiuso la sua stagione a 18 punti di media e più di 7 assist a partita, elevando il suo gioco, passando da 5 punti a 18 in una sola stagione, non gareggiando per il premio di MIP senza una ragione particolarmente valido.
I movimenti nella off-season
La chiave del cambiamento in North Carolina è affidata a due new entry, LamMelo Ball e l’ex Boston Gordon Hayward. Ciò che è cambiato da queste parti è relativo al draft del 18 novembre, visto che Charlotte disponeva di ben 4 scelte. I rookie che debutteranno in maglia Hornets sono: LaMelo Ball (scelta numero 3), i due giovani centri Vernon Carey Jr (scelta numero 32) e Nick Richards (scelta numero 42) e per ultimo la cinquantaseiesima chiamata, il play Grant Riller.
Durante la free agency è arrivato Gordon Hayward: l’ex Bulldogs, si è accasato a Charlotte via sign and trade con un maxi contratto da 120 milioni di dollari in 4 anni. Hayward si aggiunge al roster con cui giocherà nei prossimi anni assieme a volti già noti come Malik Monk, Devonte’ Graham, Terry Rozier, PJ Washington e il veterano Cody Zeller. out invece Willy Hernangomez, ora insieme a Zion ai Pelicans, Dwyane Bacon che si è trasferito a Orlando e il francese Nicolas Batum che è volato a LA sponda Clippers per liberare spazio per la firma di Hayward.
Rispetto alla scorsa stagione gli Hornets sono migliorati, hanno aggiunto talento e un veterano come Gordon Hayward che può dare leadership e grinta.
Hornets preview 2020/2021: il gioco
Il gioco degli Charlotte è sicuramente influenzato da James Borrego. Il coach scuola Spurs continuerà a spingere sul concetto di 5-out, con un giro di palla che permette di avere tutti e cinque i giocatori pronti per poter punire da tre.
Un costante giro-palla è fondamentale per non consentire di creare punti di riferimento alle difese avversarie. Da sfruttare particolarmente questa soluzione offensiva visto le buone percentuali della scorsa stagione dall’arco:
- Terry Rozier: 40.7%
- Gordon Hayward (con BOS): 38.3%
- PJ Washington: 37.4%
- Devonte’ Graham: 37.3%
L’apporto di LaMelo Ball in questo caso potrebbe essere un fattore chiave. Nonostante fosse presentato da tutti come un tiratore d’elite, le sue percentuali di tiro non sono così rassicuranti. Sia in Lituania che in Australia, la giovane point-guard ha tirato con il 38% dal campo e un solo 25% da tre. L’apporto fondamentale sarà quindi dal punto di vista di assist visto la grande capacità di passaggio del nativo di Chino Hill.
LaMelo Ball può sfruttare la sua ottima visione di gioco e di manovra che, unita a un velo di incoscienza e imprevedibilità può creare situazioni pericolose per gli avversari. Da sfruttare quest’anno è senza dubbio l’aggiunta di Gordon Hayward. Le caratteristiche del neoacquisto di Charlotte si sposano alla perfezione con tutte quelle che sono le idee tattiche di James Borrego. Offensivamente la sua versatilità potrà essere sfruttata principalmente per diminuire il carico che nella scorsa stagione è gravato su Devonte’ Graham. Una diminuzione di tiri e scelte forzate potrebbero garantire una maggiore efficienza. Graham, l’anno passato, è stato la rivoluzione in casa Hornets, ma sappiano tutti, soprattutto quanto in certe serate le percentuali al tiro siano state disastrose. La presenza di Hayward garantirà respiro e meno scelte difficili per il numero 4. Hayward potrà risultare benefico anche per Ball che avrà più spazio e libertà di manovra. Senza dimenticare Scary Terry, Pj Washington, Malik Monk e Cody Zeller.
Rozier arrivato dopo l’addio di Kemba Walker, non è riuscito a portare quello che ci si sperava. Etichettato subito come il dopo Kemba, ha perso minutaggio dopo la straordinaria crescita di Graham e per questo è un leggermente scomparso dai radar. L’arrivo di Ball potrebbe ostacolare il suo ritorno. Terry potrebbe partire come secondo playmaker, se LaMelo partirà nei 5 iniziali, per lasciare il ruolo di guardia a Graham e successivamente a Monk. Il suo tiro da tre punti è stato spesso un’arma importante e, partire dalla panchina gli consentirebbe, avendo un buon minutaggio, di essere ancora più letale e di subire un minor dispendio energetico che l’aveva penalizzato in fase difensiva lo scorso anno.
Un elemento offensivo che potrebbe penalizzare la squadra del North Carolina è il loro attacco contro una difesa schierata. Bisogna sottolineare le enormi difficoltà dei singoli a creare situazioni offensive con la squadra avversaria pronta a difendere. Nello scorso anno gli Hornets erano ultimi per percentuale al ferro, poco superiore al 41% rispetto al 52% dei Bucks che guidavano la classifica, pur optando per questa situazione con frequenza. I tiri creati palla in mano in penetrazione erano spesso contestati e con scarsi risultati. Questa problematica è propria anche del rookie LaMelo Ball, che in Australia ha troppo spesso mostrato poca incisività quando doveva aggredire la difesa palla in mano. D’altro canto, l’aggiunta di Gordon Hayward ha lo scopo di aggiungere capacità di creare situazioni pericolose dal palleggio e una minore pressione sui giocatori chiave visto la presenza maggiore di giocatori di qualità in campo. Questo potrebbe dare più sicurezza ai giocatori e aumentare leggermente le percentuali offensive.
Questo potrebbe essere il vero tallone d’Achille dei giovani ragazzi di coach Borrego. L’anno scorso giocare con una coppia di guardie molto ‘piccola’ ha penalizzato molto la tenuta difensiva generale. Nella prossima stagione l’aggiunta di LaMelo potrebbe garantire un fisico potenzialmente più adatto a fare la differenza in difesa, tuttavia anche il rookie ha mostrato poca costanza in questo fondamentale. Un pessimo atteggiamento difensivo annullerebbe di conseguenza l’impegno offensivo dei giovani Charlotte. Borrego dovrà cercare di mantenere alta la concentrazione su questo punto anche sfruttando giocatori più defensive minded come Cody Martin e il rookie Nick Richards.

Un potenziale fattore: Gordon Hayward
Il potenziale fattore in casa Charlotte è sicuramente l’ex Boston e Utah, Gordon Hayward. È passato qualche anno da quando incantava ai Jazz e ora Hayward è a tutti gli effetti un veterano. Anche se la sua carriera non è stata sicuramente fortunata, visto il grave infortunio alla tibia e caviglia sinistra durante la sua prima apparizione in maglia biancoverde il 18 ottobre 2017, è tornato a essere un buon giocatore su cui fare affidamento. Soprattutto nei playoffs disputati ad Orlando è sembrato essere il fattore chiave, quella spinta in più in casa Boston. Hayward ha concluso la sua ultima stagione coi Celtics con 17. 5 punti, quasi 7 rimbalzi e 4 assist ad allacciata di scarpe.
Perché Hayward può essere un fattore in quel di Charlotte?
Il motivo è nascosto proprio nella particolarità del roster degli Hornets. Con 4 nuovi rookie che si sono aggiunti dall’ultimo draft e gli altri giovani già presenti, Hayward è l’unico, se non contiamo Cody Zeller, veterano che può dare leadership, equilibrio e controllo a questa giovane squadra. Prima della sua firma infatti l’età media degli Hornets era poco inferiore ai 24 anni.
Lo scorso anno Hayward a Boston era secondo per net rating, il tutto in una squadra ottima, perciò la caratura del giocatore non si deve mettere in discussione. Charlotte spera di poter migliorare la crescita del suo ‘young core‘ attraverso l’aiuto di Gordon Hayward.
Hornets preview 2020/2021: le aspettative stagionali
Le aspettative stagionali per gli Charlotte Hornets anche quest’anno saranno modeste. L’anno scorso su 65 partite ne hanno vinte 23 e perse 42, quasi il doppio, e perdere così tante partite significa ‘addio playoffs‘. Quest’anno hanno aggiunto al roster 2 giocatori chiave, LaMelo e Hayward. Anche con questi due innesti in North Carolina devono rimanere con i piedi per terra.
Quest’anno andrà diversamente?
Probabilmente no. Nella zona alta della classifica, la situazione non cambierà così tanto, con i soliti Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, Miami Heat e Toronto Raptors a guidare e con l’aggiunta dei Brooklyn Nets che potrebbero puntare a prendersi le zone alte, con la coppia Irving-Durant pronta a giganteggiare nella lega.
Rispetto invece all’anno scorso, ciò che interessa particolarmente a Charlotte sono gli Atlanta Hawks. La franchigia della Georgia ha svolto bene i suoi compiti nella off-season accaparrandosi i servigi di Danilo Gallinari e Bogdan Bogdanovic che, con un Trae Young ancora più maturo rispetto agli anni passati può davvero scalare la classifica andando a lottare per i playoff. Da notare anche la nona classificata della scorsa stagione; appena sopra a Charlotte c’erano i Washington Wizard. Nella capitale è arrivato Mr. Tripla Doppia. L’aggiunta di Russell Westbrook al roster può davvero creare competitività e, con un Bradley Beal riposato e con meno responsabilità, può essere un fattore importante. Probabilmente saranno proprio gli Hawks e gli Wizard a giocarsi un posto ai playoff a discapito dei Magic, arrivatiottavi la scorsa stagione.
“Hanno avuto continuità e consistenza, spero di poter fare altrettanto qui. Devi avere disciplina e forza per rimanere concentrati sul piano. Stiamo cercando di adottare un approccio lento. E’ così per lo sviluppo dei giocatori. Avere pazienza e disciplina è fondamentale quando si cerca di costruire una squadra giovane”. ha detto il coach degli Hornets, citando gli Heat come esempio da seguire.
Dopo queste previsioni è evidente che in casa Hornets la ricostruzione non è ancora finita, non sono ancora una squadra da playoffs sicuri, ma potrebbero lottare per arrivarci, anche se la situazione potrebbe essere simile a quella dei Memphis Grizzlies della scorsa stagione, con un rookie a guidare il gruppo, Ja Morant, e un core giovane a seguirlo. I Grizzlies però hanno mancato i playoffs perdendo contro i Blazer ai play-in. Se una parte, quella dei risultati, può non creare così tanta gioia e sicurezza, la parte dello sviluppo e della ricostruzione può davvero considerarsi ad un buon punto. I giovani ci sono; da aggiungere probabilmente qualche buon veterano che può mostrare la via con l’esperienza.
L’anno prossimo vedremo quindi degli Hornets divertenti, giovani, con voglia di fare e con talento ma che probabilmente non arriveranno alla post-season, pronti per continuare a crescere anno dopo anno per continuare a citare lo stato del North Carolina non solo come la patria di Michael Jordan ma anche come la patria del buon basket.
