Una tabula rasa. In poche parole urge cancellare una stagione deludente (non la prima) e ripartire completamente da zero attuando l’ennesima ma necessaria rivoluzione: i Sacramento Kings proprio non hanno alternativa, dopo aver ampiamente tradito le aspettative da playoff con una regular season disastrosa sia sul piano tecnico che quello su quello societario, tra conflitti, litigi e varie controversie.
E dire che la passata offseason aveva gettato le basi per un nuovo ed intrigante progetto, mai iniziato in realtà. Con DeMarcus Cousins come base solida da cui partire, le altre fondamenta erano state poste con gli ingaggi di Kosta Koufos, Caron Batler, Marco Belinelli, e soprattutto Rajon Rondo, che col centro doveva formare un asse devastante. Al draft invece si era deciso di puntare su Willie Cauley-Stein, lungo dalle spiccate doti difensive. Il tutto sotto la direzione di coach George Karl, che aveva preso in mano le operazioni nel febbraio 2015, in sostituzione del coach ad interim Tyrone Corbin. Ed ecco il primo punto da contestare al front office dei Kings, la scelta dell’allenatore. O meglio, la cacciata di quello precedente.
Si perchè prima di Karl e di Corbin sulla panchina dei californiani sedeva Michael Malone, specializzato nelle ricostruzioni e nella crescita dei gruppi giovani. Ebbene, il proprietario Vivek Ranadive ha avuto la brillante idea di esonerarlo, nel dicembre 2014, dopo una partenza rallentata a seguito della pesante assenza di DMC. A gravare la vicenda ci sono stati poi i rapporti non idilliaci tra l’allenatore e l’allora general manager Pete D’Alessandro. Una mossa che si è rivelata azzardata, sia perchè Malone era gradito da tutti i giocatori e sia perchè Karl non è riuscito a portare sui binari giusti la squadra ( e non solo per colpa sua).
L’ex guida dei Seattle Supersonics non è riuscito a dare al roster l’alchimia che tanto serviva, curando troppo la fase d’attacco e trascurando colpevolmente quella difensiva. I numeri parlano chiaro: sebbene i Kings siano risultati una delle bocche di fuoco più calde di tutta la lega (terza squadra per punti segnati con 106 di media messi a segno ogni 100 possessi), gli stessi sono risultati essere la peggior difesa, con 108.4 punti di media concessi ogni 100 possessi. Peggio dei derelitti Philadelphia Sixers, addirittura. Avendo un regista puro come Rondo a comandare la manovra, un giocatore dotato di un’esagerata creatività, Karl poteva rivedere sicuramente gli schemi per la retroguardia, risultati inesorabilmente fragili. Inoltre, gli si rimprovera il fatto di aver rotto con l’intera squadra, chiedendo la cessione di Cousins: la società si è categoricamente rifiutata, andando in conflitto con il coach con il netto rischio di dargli il benservito. Alla faccia delle rassicurazioni di Vlade Divac, la frattura tra tutte le parti in causa non si è risanata, con continui e molesti rumors che sono rimbalzati per tutto l’anno. Come poteva una squadra, in questo clima surreale, lottare per il traguardo preposto?
Le scelte del front office, quindi, si sono rivelate tutt’altro che azzeccate. La gestione della squadra è stata alquanto effimera e frenetica, tanto che Ranadive il più delle volte è andato in contrasto con i proprietari di minoranza della franchigia, non contenti per l’operato generale. Ciò non ha fatto altro che gettare benzina sul fuoco.
Ed ora cosa bisognerà fare per ripartire? Innanzitutto scegliere a mente fredda e con razionalità il prossimo condottiero, che possibilmente dovrebbe restare per più di una stagione in California. Poi si passerà alla ricostruzione del roster, che dovrà essere fatta senza prendere giocatori a casaccio e seguendo delle linee guida. Se Rondo potrebbe salutare, non è da escludere neanche la partenza di Cousins: il centro, soprattutto nelle ultime uscite, ha mostrato che caratterialmente ha ancora qualche lacuna e ciò potrebbe convincere i Kings a privarsi di lui in cambio di elementi futuribili su cui lavorare per gli anni che verranno. Serve dunque una tabula rasa, per ripartire dopo questo caotico e doloroso fallimento.
