Lakers, Pechino cancella gli eventi in programma per NBA Cares prima della sfida di pre-season in Cina tra i gialloviola ed Brooklyn Nets, e c’è il rischio che anche la gara debba saltare.
La prima delle due partite tra Lakers e Nets è in programma giovedì 10 ottobre alla Mercedes-Benz Arena di Shanghai, mentre la seconda si terrà – salvo sviluppi – due giorni dopo alla Dayun Arena di Shenzhen. Nella partita di giovedì ci dovrebbe essere inoltre il debutto in maglia Brooklyn Nets di Kyrie Irving, in forse per una frattura al volto rimediata tre settimane fa in allenamento.
E’ l’ennesimo sviluppo della vicenda “Cina vs basket USA” innescata da un tweet imprudente di Daryl Morey general manager degli Houston Rockets, a sostegno dei movimenti di protesta ad Hong Kong. Come riportato da Tania Ganguli del LA Times, gli inservienti stanno rimuovendo a Shanghai la grande insegna che pubblicizza la partita fuori dall’arena, mentre in tutti gli NBA Store sul territorio cinese è stato rimossa l’intera linea di merchandising griffata Houston Rockets.

Tutti gli eventi e gli incontri con i media che avrebbero dovuto precedere la partita sono stati “rimandati” ad orario da decidersi, preso atto della “situazione fluida“, come comunicato dalla NBA.
Nella giornata di martedì, il Commissioner NBA Adam Silver aveva tentato da Tokyo di sbloccare la situazione, ribadendo però il supporto della NBA a Morey ed alla libertà d’espressione di ogni cittadino americano. Il comportamento ambiguo della lega, che in Cina ha forti interessi ed un bacino di pubblico immenso, ha suscitato negli stati Uniti una polemica sulla relativa “fermezza” nei rapporti diplomatici con Pechino e “le sue provocazioni”. Pur dolendosi della possibile offesa ai tanti tifosi cinesi, la lega non si è espressamente scusata con Pechino, suscitando la reazione “muscolare” del governo.

Lakers-Nets a rischio, gli sponsor si ritirano
La CCTV, la TV di stato cinese, ha annunciato nelle scorse ore che non trasmetterà le prossime partite NBA in palinstesto, comprese le due sfide di pre-season tra Lakers e Nets, in reazione alle parole di Morey ed all’intromissione di un Paese estero nelle politiche interne di Stato: “Siamo fortemente insoddisfatti del comportamento tenuto da Silver nel difendere quanto espresso da Morey” Così CCTV “Riteniamo che qualsiasi affermazioni legata alla sfera della sovranità nazionale non possa rientrare nel pieno diritto di libertà di parola“. Alcuni degli sponsor dell’evento hanno ritirato il proprio supporto.
A latere, anche la partita di G-League tra Rio Grande Valley Rapids e Texas Legends, affiliate di Rockets e Mavs, in programma in Cina a fine ottobre è stata cancellata.
Tra i sostenitori della condotta di Adam Silver c’è l’allenatore dei San Antonio Spurs Gregg Popovich, come sempre attivo e e ben informato su attualità e politica internazionale, che ha parlato di Silver come di “un leader progressista”: “Sono davvero entusiasta per quello che ha detto. (…) Adam Silver è un leader progressista. (…) Quando ha difeso il diritto di libertà di parola mi ha fatto sentire alla grande“.
Anche Doc Rivers, head coach dei Los Angeles Clippers, è intervenuto sulla crisi in atto: “Possiamo dissentire, possiamo dire di non condividere, ne abbiamo il diritto. L’America è questo: diritto di espressione e parola, qualcosa che tutti dovremmo avere. Ma ai miei giocatori ho sempre detto: libertà di espressione non significa libertà dalle conseguenze delle nostre parole (…) è sempre bene pensare alle conseguenze prima di parlare“.
