Settimana pazza quella appena terminata per gli Oklahoma City Thunder. L’operazione di Enes Kanter e (soprattutto) l’esonero di Scott Brooks dopo sette anni alla guida della franchigia hanno rubato la scena NBA in questa settimana. Come sempre, trattandosi di Oklahoma City, i rumors e le voci di corridoio hanno cominciato ad accavallarsi in modo incessante riguardo i possibili candidati per la panchina e le reazioni dei giocatori alla notizia del licenziamento di coach Brooks.
Le parole di Sam Presti mercoledì durante la conferenza stampa sono state ben ponderate. Il GM ha spiegato che questo licenziamento non è un fallimento ma una evoluzione, poiché “I cambiamenti nell’organizzazione a volte sono necessari. Così come la continuità è richiesta per raggiungere successi, il cambiamento e la transizione sono necessari per il progresso e l’evoluzione. E così noi prendiamo atto del cambiamento e puntiamo verso il prossimo passo per lo sviluppo della nostra organizzazione”.
Tuttavia dietro a questa affermazione di facciata si nasconde quella sinistra sensazione secondo cui con coach Brooks per un motivo o per l’altro anche l’anno prossimo Oklahoma sarebbe stata fuori dalla corsa per il titolo: considerando l’importanza della prossima annata, in cui ci sarà la reale possibilità di perdere Kevin Durant in caso di mancato titolo, Sam Presti ha ritenuto questo passaggio inevitabile nella storia della franchigia.
La dirigenza dei Thunder in queste settimane sta nutrendo la speranza di riuscire a far fare alla franchigia quel salto di qualità che è accaduto ai Warriors con l’allontanamento di Mark Jackson e l’arrivo di Steve Kerr, anche se per riuscirci bisogna centrare il nome per la prossima panchina.
Sam Presti non ha più scuse questa volta: dopo la decisione su Harden e la conferma di Brooks nel 2013 dopo la sconfitta in semifinale contro la meno quotata Memphis, questa scelta pare essere l’ennesima decisione delicata in cui il GM rischia di rimetterci la faccia.
In caso di fallimento infatti, più che l’allenatore o i giocatori, toccherebbe proprio a lui essere messo alla sbarra dei colpevoli, poiché si tratterebbe dell’ennesima prova incapacità nel saper sfruttare tutto il talento accumulato tra gli ultimi anni a Seattle e i primi nel sud degli Stati Uniti.
Tuttavia trovare il nome giusto per l’anno prossimo sembra essere più difficile di quanto sembri, perché non è chiaro chi vorrebbe prendersi sulle spalle la responsabilità di una franchigia del genere, a cui è richiesto di vincere subito.
Infatti Oklahoma ha smesso di essere quella squadra giovane con un futuro di sicuro avvenire: cedendo diverse scelte per rifare la panchina e con i tre migliori giocatori (Westbrook, Ibaka e Durant) che hanno già attraversato tutti almeno un infortunio grave, i Thunder si trovano in un momento di maturazione in cui o si arriverà al titolo o imploderà su sé stessa.
Tra tutti i nomi fatti finora, i tifosi dei Thunder hanno dovuto leggere personaggi molto diversi tra loro, con esperienze diverse e con approcci alla pallacanestro diversi.
Tra quelli più o meno probabili, 5 nomi sono quelli su cui vale la pena soffermarsi un attimo di più per approfondire la situazione e valutarne i pro e contro:
- KEVIN OLLIE: inutile girarci intorno, lui era e resta il nome prescelto. Godendo anche della benedizione di Kevin Durant e di un passato insieme a grandissimi giocatori che gli hanno sempre riconosciuto doti da leader, il coach di UConn (campione NCAA nel 2013) sembra avere tutte le caratteristiche necessarie per piacere a dirigenza e giocatori. Tuttavia, le indiscrezioni raccolte da chi è vicino a lui riportano un sorprendente rifiuto da parte del giovane allenatore che preferirebbe continuare a crescere professionalmente a livello collegiale prima di tentare il grande salto in NBA.
- BILLY DONOVAN: bicampione NCAA nel 2006 e 2007, l’allenatore dei Florida Gators è l’altra grande alternativa tra i nomi degli allenatori collegiali. A differenza di Ollie, Donovan sembra molto desideroso di cominciare questa avventura tentando il salto tra “i grandi” (dopo aver avuto una piccola parentesi con i Magic), ma quello che non convince ancora è l’impatto che andrebbe a dare nello spogliatoio. Se infatti da un lato si può dire che sono stati diversi i giocatori allenati da lui che poi successivamente sono stati in grado di diventare protagonisti assoluti nel panorama NBA, dall’altro non si può sapere nulla sulla sua capacità di gestire la pressione di uno spogliatoio di grandi aspettative come quello dei Thunder.
- TOM THIBODEAU: è una delle ipotesi sicuramente più affascinanti. La sua esperienza ai Chicago Bulls sembra essere in dirittura d’arrivo, a prescindere da come andranno i playoff. Se così fosse Sam Presti potrebbe tentare l’assalto ad un allenatore di fama e che ha già allenato grandi campioni riuscendo sempre a raccogliere buoni risultati. Tuttavia in questo caso Oklahoma, se vorrà davvero tentare l’affondo in questo senso, dovrà aspettare fino al fine della stagione e vedere le reali intenzioni di Thibo e della dirigenza dei Bulls prima di tentare l’assalto, con il rischio però di restare a bocca asciutta in caso di rinnovo tra le parti.
- MARK JACKSON: un nome molto in voga tra quelli disponibili e con esperienza NBA. I suoi anni a Golden State hanno mostrato le sue qualità nel far crescere una squadra molto giovane, anche se non gli è mai riuscito quel salto di qualità che sta avvenendo ora alla franchigia con Steve Kerr. Per questo motivo il nome non convince del tutto la dirigenza: infatti i Thunder ormai hanno abbandonato quella fase della crescita già da un anno, entrando in quella di piena maturazione. Se Jackson ha fallito questo passaggio con Thompson e Curry, perché mai dovrebbe farcela con Westbrook e Durant?
- ETTORE MESSINA: per noi italiani forse l’opzione più suggestiva, poiché si tratterebbe del primo allenatore europeo alla guida di una franchigia NBA. L’idea di ricalcare il percorso compiuto dai Cavs con Blatt di scegliere un allenatore che in Europa ha vinto tutto piace a Sam Presti. Inoltre la sua formazione americana come assistente, prima ai Lakers e ora agli Spurs, ha aumentato la sua notorietà nel circuito. La speranza che si possa ripetere quello che è accaduto a Budenholzer con Atlanta, in cui il coach prima ha appreso tutti i segreti di Popovich per poi personalizzarli con la propria idea di pallacanestro, piace tantissimo al GM (anche lui di scuola Spurs) Sam Presti. Tuttavia il coach siciliano sembra quotato sempre più ad essere proprio il successore di coach Pop nei prossimi anni: per questo motivo la possibilità di restare ancora un paio di anni sotto l’ala del pluricampione NBA prima di prendere in mano la gestione di una organizzazione già perfettamente funzionante potrebbe convincere coach Messina a rifiutare ogni tipo di ipotesi lontana dall’ombra dell’Alam
Soltanto con il passare del tempo potrà essere più chiara la strategia del GM Sam Presti in vista della prossima stagione, in cui Oklahoma vuole tornare assolutamente ad essere protagonista.
