Quello che ha fatto però scalpore durante la partita è stato l‘infortunio al piede sinistro di Stephen Curry verso la fine della partita. I tifosi dei Warriors hanno scaricato la colpa dell’infortunio della loro superstar sul lungo dei Celtics Al Horford, reo di essersi buttato sulla gamba di Curry mentre cercava di prendere una palla vagante. Il 2 volte MVP non ha poi più fatto ritorno in campo dopo quell’episodio, anche se il coach degli Warriors Steve Kerr ha poi spiegato come ciò non fosse correlato all’infortunio.
A difesa del compagno di squadra è arrivato il DPOY di questa stagione Marcus Smart. Il prodotto di Oklahoma State ha voluto chiarire come stessero le cose. “Sono le Finals. Ci sono giocatori che si buttano ovunque. Anche i loro giocatori lo fanno, e noi non diciamo nulla. Anche noi ci facciamo del male, ma continuiamo a giocare. Non c’è nulla di intenzionale, sono le Finals. Noi cerchiamo di vincere tanto quanto loro. Il primo che arriva sulla palla, come sappiamo tutti, vince. Possono lamentarsi quanto vogliono, ma alla fine le cose stanno in questo modo. Non c’è stato nulla di cattivo. È un gioco leale, è basket leale. È il basket delle Finals. Nessuno qui gioca per fare del male a qualcuno.”
Lo stesso Al Horford ha voluto ribadire come sia stata una situazione sfortunata. “Non ha nulla a che fare con Steph. Ho visto la palla e mi sono buttato. Stavamo cercando di vincere la partita, non penso ci sia nessuna controversia in questo.”
