In casa Washington Wizards si inizia a parlare del ritorno di John Wall, tuttavia ci sarà ancora da aspettare. Continua il percorso di riabilitazione dopo la rottura del tendine d’Achille avvenuta nel dicembre del 2018 in un incidente domestico.
Negli ultimi mesi il giocatore ha fatto numerosi progressi: infatti ha iniziato a partecipare agli allenamenti della squadra, anche in alcuni frangenti delle partitelle 5 contro 5. I suoi progressi sono stati attestati anche da coach Scott Brooks. “Sta lavorando. Non ha giocato molti 5 contro 5, ma abbastanza da vedere che sta andando nella strada giusta. Tornerà ad essere il John che tutti amiamo. Tornerà ad essere una delle migliori point guard della lega quando tornerà”. In ogni caso, è stato confermato che Wall non farà il suo rientro almeno fino alla prossima stagione. Il tempo stimato ancora per il suo recupero completo è di 7 mesi.
Recentemente ha ricordato il suo ex compagno anche Marcin Gortat che ha giocato per gli Wizards per 5 stagioni, dal 2013 al 2018. Durante questa permanenza nella capitale ha formato insieme a Wall una delle coppie più forti sull’asse point guard-centro. Poi il polacco ha fatto parte di una trade che lo ha portato ai Los Angeles Clippers per delle divergenze proprio col compagno di squadra. Ma ripensando a quel frangente della sua carriera, Gortat l’ha descritto come una delle esperienze più belle.
“Giocare con John (Wall, ndr) era straordinario. Mi piacerebbe aver sacrificato più tempo per essere stato un leader migliore, durante il quarto e quinto anno all’interno dello spogliatoio. Ora posso solo dire ‘mi piacerebbe’. Ma lo ripeto, sono stati cinque anni grandiosi”.
L’asse Gortat-Wall è stato infatti uno dei più insidiosi della lega e, guardando indietro, il polacco qualche rimorso ce l’ha. “Bisogna apprezzare quello che si ha. Apprezzi quello che hai solo una volta che lo hai perso. Ho apprezzato John molto di più quando sono approdato ai Clippers. E avevo una point guard giovane come Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander, ndr). Che è una grande point guard, ma è uno scorer naturale, non un passatore. Ho imparato a LA molto in fretta che non era la stessa cosa”.
Washington infatti con la presenza di Gortat sotto canestro riusciva anche ad essere efficace in quanto a rimbalzi. Col suo addio, hanno provato a rimpiazzarlo con Dwight Horward che tuttavia ha giocato solo 9 partite durante la scorsa stagione per diversi problemi alla schiena. Ora gli Wizards si portano ancora dietro questi problemi dato che come lungo Ian Mahinmi non dà lo stesso apporto di Gortat e il giovane Thomas Bryant è ancora acerbo.
Nel mese dei febbraio, il lungo polacco ha annunciato il suo addio al basket.
