I Cleveland Cavs assumeranno Luke Walton come assistente allenatore, l’ex coach di Lakers e Kings farà parte dalla prossima stagione dello staff tecnico di coach JB Bickerstaff.
Walton era stato esonerato a novembre a Sacramento, dopo oltre due stagioni come capo allenatore, in precedenza aveva allenato i Los Angeles Lakers fino al 2019, al primo anno dell’era LeBron James. I Cavaliers sono arrivati settimi nella Eastern Conference nel 2021\22 e hanno disputato i play-in, dove sono stati eliminati dai Brooklyn Nets.
Dopo la fine della carriera da giocatore, spesa soprattutto con i Lakers, Luke Walton era stato dal 2014 al 2016 nello staff di Steve Kerr ai Golden State Warriors, e nel 2016 era diventato head coach dei Lakers in ricostruzione, con Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball e Kyle Kuzma, sostituendo Byron Scott. Dopo l’esonero a LA al termine dell’annata 2018\19, l’allora general manager dei Kings Vlade Divac lo aveva voluto come head coach al posto di Dave Joerger, ma nelle prime due stagioni a Sacramento non erano mai arrivati i playoffs. A novembre 2021 l’esonero, con Alvin Gentry a subentrare per portare a termine la stagione.
