La sfida contro i campioni d’Europa in carica è uno snodo cruciale per determinare la maturità, e di conseguenza il successo, della nazionale slovena. Per questo coach Kokoskov decide di rimescolare le carte e schierare in quintetto Anthony Randolph, che gli iberici li conosce bene, giocando nel Real Madrid. Accanto a lui gli intoccabili Dragic e Doncic, Blazic da guardia e Vidmar sotto le plance.
La Slovenia parte attaccando in maniera larga, cercando il contropiede primario e, se non ci sono sbocchi, sfruttando una serie di blochi per far saltare le marcatore della Roja e utilizzando il pick&roll tra un esterno e un lungo (Dragic e Doncic con Randolph o Vidmar) per creare spazio per la penetrazione o per il ribaltamento. Dall’altra parte, invece, i bianco-verdi provano a contenere i fratelli Gasol ingolfando l’area, opponendo fisico sotto i tabelloni e muovendosi all’unisono quando la Spagna fa viaggiare la palla.
I mitteleuropei iniziano con il piede giusto, pestando sull’acceleratore grazie al tiro dall’arco. La squadra di coach Sergio Scariolo, dal canto suo, alterna la propria produzione, ma ha difficoltà quando si tratta di arrivare nel pitturato a causa delle attente marcature slovene. La tripla di Nikolic vuol dire +6, che diventa +7 con il tiro libero messo da Vidmar sui due concessi. Il dinamismo di Randolph è fondamentale, specie se unito a una pericolosità in varie zone del campo e all’abilità di trovare i compagni con passaggi intelligenti e precisi.
Verso la fine del primo periodo, gli uomini del Tricorno trovano un inaspettato tiro in sospensione dal neo-entrato Zagorac e, dopo il gioco da tre punti di Marc Gasol, una tripla di Prepelic su un gioco a due con Vidmar. La Spagna trova due canestri in avvicinamento con Rodriguez e Oriola. A quel punto, con otto secondi da giocare, coach Kokoskov rimette in campo Dragic, che riceve a metà campo, elude la pressione iberica e segna da tre, andando pure a prendersi il libero per il fallo di Sastre. Anche se l’aggiuntivo non va a bersaglio, la mazzata per la Spagna è notevole: il punteggio alla prima curva dice 25-19 per la Slovenia, che però sembra avere l’inerzia psicologica dalla propria.
Ciò viene confermato dalle prime azioni del secondo periodo: gli spagnoli partono aggressivi ma perdono palla con Rodriguez in entrata, consentendo il recupero di Cancar, il quale vola immediatamente in contropiede, arriva nei pressi del ferro e serve l’accorrente Randolph per una schiacciata mancina. El Chaco prova a rifarsi con una tripla, ma dall’altra parte Prepelic rende la pariglia, sfruttando la schermatura dei propri lunghi.
La Slovenia ha in prima battuta l’atteggiamento giusto, non considerando perso alcun pallone e difendendo forte su tutti gli avversari, in particolare se vicino all’area. Questo può portare talvolta fuori equilibrio la retroguardia, come succede nel caso della tripla di Oriola, che insieme alla coppia di tiri dalla linea della carità di Willy Hernangomez riporta la Roja a un solo possesso di distanza.
Da quel momento le due squadre iniziano a darsi battaglia colpo su colpo, e si susseguono un jumpshot di Prepelic, un sottomano di Hernangomez, una tripla di Doncic dopo blocco-e-giro tra Dragic e Vidmar e conseguente scarico e una lacrima di Rodriguez, un layup di Juancho Hernangomez, un tiro in sospensione dal pitturato di Dragic e un altro appoggio di Willy Hernangomez, vero go-to guy spagnolo in questo frangente. La Slovenia ha il pallino in mano, ma la Spagna non è disposta a cedere la corona senza prima combattere, come dimostra la transizione orchestrata da Rubio e conclusa da Gasol con una schiacciata.
A un certo punto il ritmo della gara si alza, e le due squadre iniziano a giocare in velocità, e da un’azione così nasce la tripla dall’angolo di Zagorac su ribaltamento di Doncic che dà alla Slovenia il +7. Acquietatasi la cadenza degli attacchi, i bianco-verdi iniziano a martellare, e trovano il massimo vantaggio a 9 lunghezze con un gioco a due Nikolic-Vidmar chiuso da una imperiosa bimane del lungo, replicata da un appoggio al ferro del suo sostituto Dimec due azioni dopo su assist di Doncic, dopo due canestri spagnoli. Marc Gasol dalla lunetta sigilla il 49-45 con cui si va al riposo, in una gara davvero combattuta.
Dopo la pausa il redivivo Blazic trova due volte in contropiede la via del canestro avversario. Sergio Scariolo poco è costretto a chiamare time out sul penetra-e-scarica di Randolph, che prende la linea di fondo, attira la difesa e serve Vidmar per un comodo sottomano: il quel momento la sua squadra ha Marc Gasol gravato di tre falli, tre minuti di carestia offensiva e uno svantaggio in doppia cifra. Rubio e San Emeterio tamponano l’emorragia, ma la Slovenia cavalca l’intesa tra i propri big men e non sbanda. Doncic in penetrazione causa quasi il quarto fallo di Marc Gasol, che per precauzione viene fatto uscire, per poi servire a Randolph in ala il pallone che diventa la tripla del +13.
Pau Gasol ci mette una pezza in post basso, solo temporanea visto che sul fronte opposto Prepelic serve Dimec che in corsa fa centro. Gli uomini del Tricorno vivono una trance agonistica, difendono in maniera accanita e attaccano il canestro con continuità, come nel caso dell’azione in solitaria di Doncic che diventa un filtrante sotto canestro per Dimec, che ottiene un gioco da tre punti, completato dal suo libero.
Alla giostra si unisce anche Randolph, che dall’angolo manda a bersaglio una tripla pur essendo marcato. La Spagna trova sì anch’essa un canestro da oltre l’arco, ma è imprecisa, arruffona, tanto da regalare ai bianco-verdi una rimessa che si tramuta nel quarto fallo di Juancho Hernangomez e due liberi per Doncic, entrambi a segno. Rodriguez in slalom trova due punti vitali per tenere in carreggiata gli iberici, anche all’ultimo intervallo breve il punteggio dice comunque 73-57.
Pronti-via nel quarto periodo e Prepelic infilza da fermo, da fuori, l’impreparata retroguardia spagnola, per l’occasione schierata a zona. Juancho Hernangomez trova il fallo di Dragic sul tiro da tre che vuol dire un timido riavvicinamento, mentre Marc Gasol commette il suo quarto personale. Questo non demoralizza la Spagna, che anzi con il coast-to-coast di Rubio manda a referto altri due punti, costringendo coach Kokoskov a chiamare un minuto per parlarci sopra e, soprattutto, per spezzare il ritmo degli avversari.
Al rientro, in campo ci sono Dragic, Doncic e Vidmar del quintetto titolare, Prepelic che di solito alza il ritmo partendo dalla panchina e Zagorac, per dare fisicità ed esperienza. La Slovenia ingorga gli spazi in area costringendo la Roja a girare palla per vie perimetrali, mentre il suo play si mette in proprio, prima segnando dopo aver recuperato la carambola sul proprio errore, poi con una bomba che scrive +21 come differenziale. Coach Kokoskov coglie l’attimo e lo toglie dal campo nel momento di climax, per fargli conservare preziose energie.
La Spagna riesce in questo frangente a costruire un mini-parziale, grazie a due liberi di Marc Gasol e una tripla di Fernando San Emeterio. Il riposo di Dragic dura poco, ma basta per permettergli di servire un Randolph ben piazzato che sfrutta le lunghe leve e dall’ala arriva fino al ferro. La squadra di Sergio Scariolo tenta una reazione, ma il canestro di Marc Gasol che gira sul ferro ed esce dà la sensazione che non sia serata.
La Slovenia a quel punto dosa con equilibrio le forze e il tempo, mentre agli iberici manca la lucidità per concretizzare il contropiede rapido con cui vorrebbero ritornare a contatto, soprattutto perché Dragic continua a essere una spina nel fianco, almeno fino a quando non viene nuovamente richiamato in panchina. La palla muore tra le mani degli sloveni, che si impongono 92-72 e possono così festeggiare la prima medaglia della loro storia.
