Klay Thompson ha firmato un contratto da 190 milioni di dollari in 5 anni nel 2019.
Il 33enne guadagnerà infatti circa 43 milioni di dollari nella stagione 2023-24, l’ultima del suo attuale contratto, e quest’estate sarà nuovamente eleggibile per un’estensione contrattuale.
Prima della sconfitta dei Golden State Warriors, per 126-123 contro i Sacramento Kings, Adrian Wojnarowski (ESPN) ha dichiarato che Klay si aspetta un’estensione contrattuale di livello massimo durante la prossima offseason.
“Thompson, secondo quanto mi è stato riferito, si aspetta di essere ricompensato con una nuova estensione contrattuale di livello massimo durante questa offseason” ha detto Woj. “Questo è un punto di inflessione per l’organizzazione di Golden State, che potrebbe trovarsi di fronte ad una luxury tax di oltre 500 milioni di dollari. Resta solo da vedere se Joe Lacob ha intenzione di pagarla”.
Ad ottobre, Thompson ha dichiarato di non essere troppo preoccupato per le trattative incombenti di Golden State. E, quando domenica gli è stato chiesto del comunicato di Wojnarowski, il giocatore ha mantenuto un’opinione simile.
“Sto cercando di vincere un anello” sostiene. “Tutto il resto si risolverà da solo”.
Potremmo dire che Klay Thompson sta vivendo una delle migliori stagioni della sua straordinaria carriera in NBA.
Continua ad essere un pezzo importante degli Warriors, nel tentativo di difendere il titolo NBA vinto nel 2022. Ma il 33enne merita davvero un’estensione massima del contratto quest’estate?
Nella sua prima stagione completa, dopo aver subito una lacerazione del legamento crociato anteriore nelle NBA Finals del 2019 e una lacerazione del tendine d’Achille che lo ha messo fuori gioco per tutta la stagione 2020-21, Klay ha giocato in ben 69 delle 82 partite dell’attuale regular season.
Ha segnato 21.9 punti a partita (terza media di punteggio più alta della sua carriera), ed è diventato il terzo giocatore della classifica all-time della NBA a realizzare almeno 300 tiri da 3 punti (301, per la precisione) in una singola stagione.
Sebbene ci fosse non poca preoccupazione sulle condizioni fisiche di Klay, lui è stato bravissimo a mettere a tacere ogni dubbio sul suo contributo per la squadra.
Di conseguenza, non è troppo difficile capire perché il numero 11 di Golden State potrebbe essere pagato così tanto quest’estate.
Certo, mantenere il nucleo dinastico degli Warriors, composto da Klay, Steph Curry e Draymond Green, non sarà economico.
Ad ottobre, Andrew Wiggins ha ricevuto un’estensione contrattuale da 109 milioni di dollari in 4 anni, mentre Jordan Poole ha firmato un contratto da 123 milioni di dollari in 4 anni, con un valore massimo di 140 milioni di dollari.
Inoltre, quest’estate Green può scegliere di rinunciare alla sua player option da 27.6 milioni di dollari, nella speranza di firmare una nuova estensione a lungo termine.
Se Klay dovesse ottenere un’estensione, e Green opterà per la sua player option, la luxury tax di Golden State potrebbe avvicinarsi davvero ai 500 milioni di dollari.
Per ora, Klay spera di ritirarsi da Warriors, secondo Wojnarowski.
Sarà quindi interessante vedere come la franchigia gestirà le proprie risorse quest’estate, nel tentativo di avverare questo desiderio.
