In estate i San Antonio Spurs hanno visto il loro roster modificarsi parecchio con tanti arrivi e diverse partenze. Tra i volti nuovi arrivati nel Texas c’era quello del lungo ex Blazers Zach Collins. I primi 4 anni del prodotto di Gonzaga hanno mostrato un giocatore di talento, attualmente un role player utile a squadre ambizione, però con margini di crescita, ma soprattutto un fisico troppo fragile e propenso all’infortunio.
I tanti infortuni e lunghi stop, non gioca una partita NBA dai playoffs del 2020, hanno spinto la franchigia di Portland a non rinnovare il suo contratto. Gli Spurs, invece, ci hanno voluto puntare e in free agency gli hanno offerto un triennale da 22 milioni (di cui però solo il primo anno è interamente garantito).
Fino a oggi Collins è sempre stato fermo ai box senza riuscire a giocare neanche un minuto con gli Spurs. Ma nelle ultime settimane ha ripreso ad allenarsi regolarmente, giocando anche una partita in G-League. Per Zach sembra ormai prossimo il debutto con la nuova maglia.
Rientro Zach Collins, possibile il debutto con gli Spurs già a fine gennaio?
Domenica il lungo ex Blazers è stato assegnato alla G-League affiliata alla franchigia di San Antonio, gli Austin Spurs, e ieri ha disputato la sua prima partita dopo un anno e mezzo dall’ultima. Collins ha chiuso il match mettendo a referto 8 punti e 3 stoppate in 19 minuti sul parquet contro i Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Stando a quanto riporta Tom Orsborn di Sant Antonio Express News, il 24enne giocherà ancora almeno un’altra partita in G-League, quella di venerdì, con gli Austin Spurs prima di tornare tra i convocati della squadra di coach Popovich.
Lo stesso giocatore, nell’intervista post partita ha dichiarato:
“Oggi è andata bene, se la caviglia risponde bene anche alla prossima sfida, allora dal giorno dopo dovrei tornare su”.
Nonostante un possibile suo ritorno nel roster attivo degli Spurs già da sabato, non però da per scontato un suo debutto già alla prima partita disponibile. Coach Popovic, infatti, ha già fatto sapere che Collins ha bisogno di tempo e allenamenti con la squadra per tornare in condizione dopo il lungo stop.
“È stato fuori per molto tempo e ora servirà un pò per farlo rientrare in condizione. Zach è da più di 6 mesi che è fermo, non gioca una partita da un’anno e mezzo e nelle ultime tre stagioni non ha mai trovato continuità. Di conseguenza ha bisogno di un rientro lento e graduale per ritrovare il suo ritmo. Deve riuscire sentirsi a proprio agio nell’appoggiare il peso sul piede e avere fiducia in se stesso: fisicamente e mentalmente”.
McDermott sul rientro di Collins: “La squadra non vede l’ora di rivederlo in gruppo”
Collins, dopo una ottima stagione da rookie ed essersi ripetuto al secondo anno, ha dovuto fare i conti con una serie di problemi fisici che lo hanno costretto a giocare solo 11 partite nelle 2 stagioni successive. Il prodotto di Gonzaga ha avuto in ordine infortuni: alla spalla, al piede e alla caviglia. È proprio dalla frattura da stress al malleolo mediale della caviglia sinistra, rimediata lo scorso giugno, e dai 2 interventi che ne sono derivati che sta cercando di rientrare il giocatore degli Spurs.
A intervenire sulla questione del rientro di Zach è anche uno dei suoi nuovi compagni di squadra l’ala Doug McDermott. L’ex Bulls ha dichiarato:
“Tutta la squadra e lo staff è impaziente di vedere Collins tornare in gruppo. È stato un lungo viaggio per lui ed ora che finisca e possa tornare a giocare senza troppi pensieri”.
