Il neo capo allenatore dei Brooklyn Nets Steve Nash ha chiesto a Dirk Nowitzki, leggenda dei Dallas Mavs ed ex compagno di squadra del canadese, di accettare un posto da assistente allenatore a Brookyln.
Come riportato da Brad Townsend del Dallas Moring Star però, Dirk avrebbe declinato nei giorni scorsi la proposta di Nash, spiegando come in questa fase allenare non sia tra le sue priorità. Dopo il ritiro nel 2019, Nowitzki è rimasto ovviamente a Dallas e si è dedicato alla famiglia ed alle attività di beneficenza di cui è uomo immagine con la sua fondazione.
Nei mesi scorsi, il proprietario dei Mavs Mark Cuban aveva dichiarato che la porta per un ingresso nel gruppo proprietario della squadra per Nowitzki sarebbe sempre rimasta aperta, e lo stesso Dirk non ha escluso in futuro tale ipotesi.
“Per prima cosa, non so se sarei in grado di fare l’allenatore“, spiega l’MVP e campione NBA “E soprattutto altrove se non qui a Dallas. In più ritengo che non sia ancora il momento giusto, sto passando tanto tempo con la mia famiglia e oggi il basket è più in secondo piano, non ci penso“.
Steve Nash è diventato abbastanza a sorpresa il nuovo head coach dei Brooklyn Nets, che dopo l’addio a coach Kenny Atkinson hanno puntato su di lui per gestire un gruppo di star come Kevin Durant e Kyrie Irving, e di veterani come DeAndre Jordan, Spencer Dinwiddie e Taurean Prince. Con KD, Irving ed il talento di Caris LeVert, Jarrett Allen e Dinwiddie, i Nets tenteranno di raggiungere dalla prossima stagione la vetta della Eastern Conference con coach Nash, alla sua prima esperienza assoluta su di una panchina NBA dopo gli anni da consulente ai Golden State Warriors.
Nash e Nowitzki hanno giocato assieme a Dallas dal 1998 – anno in cui Dirk venne scelto al draft NBA – al 2004. Ai Mavs con coach Don Nelson i Mavericks hanno raggiunto la finale di conference nel 2003, perdendo contro i San Antonio Spurs di Tim Duncan. Nell’estate 2004 Steve Nash divenne free agent e firmò con i Phoenix Suns, dove sarebbe diventato due volte MVP, Nowitzki avrebbe raggiunto due volte la finale NBA ai Mavs vincendo finalmente nel 2011.
