E’ arrivata nella serata di ieri la notizia che i New York Knicks e Tom Thibodeau hanno trovato un accordo per un contratto quinquennale e già si sono sollevate diverse voci contrastanti, compresa quella dell’ex Golden State Warriors David West.
Se la stagione 2019/20 poteva sembrare per i Knicks quella dell’inizio del rilancio, alla fine si è dimostrata l’ennesimo fallimento. Ed è stato subito chiaro fin dalla cacciata a novembre di coach David Fizdale. E’ seguita quindi una stagione di ombre che ha visto un’altra rivoluzione all’interno del front office della franchigia.
A febbraio infatti ha fatto le valigie anche Steve Mills che ha lasciato il ruolo di “president of the basketball operations” a Leon Rose. Quest’ultimo sta lavorando già da qualche mese senza fare promesse mirabolanti affinché la franchigia della grande Mela possa davvero rialzarsi. Dopo aver vagliato una rosa di nomi che comprendeva anche Kenny Atkinson e Jason Kidd, Rose ha deciso di optare per l’ex head coach di Chicago Bulls e Minnesota Timberwolves.
C’è chi ha accolto la notizia con entusiasmo e c’è chi, invece, ha già decretato l’ennesimo passo falso della franchigia. In una squadra giovane e ricolma di talento ancora acerbo, forse la figura di Thibodeau non è l’ideale. Su di lui aleggia da sempre il mito secondo cui abbia bisogno di giocatori pronti e fatti, e che sappia solo rovinare i giovani con prospettive.

West senza giri di parole: “Perché Thibodeau ha avuto una terza chance e coach come Jackson e Lue nemmeno una seconda?“
Ha alimentato questa narrativa anche David West che si è scagliato con la scelta di New York. Mentre Kendrick Perkins (che lo ha avuto come allenatore della difesa ai tempi del titolo con i Boston Celtics) lo ha definito come la “Cultura”, West ha detto che teme per i giovani atleti in rampa di lancio che vedranno arrestarsi il loro sviluppo ma saranno comunque biasimati per non allenarsi duramente.

Secondo l’ex Warriors, Thibodeau avrebbe la propensione a distruggere i giovani giocatori. Ma non è tutto. West, infatti, si è domandato perché un coach che è già stato cacciato due volte, debba avere una terza opportunità. Forse – ha suggerito – perché è bianco?
Infatti secondo lui ci sarebbe tanti migliori allenatori neri che non hanno avuto lo stesso trattamento. Tre esempi: Mark Jackson, Tyronn Lue e Patrick Ewing. Perché il primo dopo aver posto le basi della dinastia Warriors facendo un ottimo lavoro nella Baia, non è stato più contattato? Perché Lue dopo aver vinto un titolo a Cleveland non è andato in un’altra squadra? E perché Ewing, che sta facendo molto nel college di Georgetown come head coach, non ha ancora ricevuto una chiamata in NBA?
Sono queste le domande che ha posto David West. Deprecando il fatto che Thibodeau abbia avuto ancora un’altra opportunità del genere.
I Knicks in una nota emessa nelle ultime ore hanno anche comunicato di essere stati stupiti da Jamahl Mosley (assistant coach dei Mavericks) e Will Hardy (assistant coach degli Spurs). Tuttavia, hanno preferito optare per un allenatore già esperto e navigato.
