La free agency si apre con i Cleveland Cavs scatenati sul mercato. Nella sola prima giornata di free agency la dirigenza dei Cavs ha rifirmato Caris LeVert, accordandosi anche con l’es Sixers Georges Niang e con l’ex Heat Max Strus. Il tutto nella prima ora dall’apertura delle trattative. La dirigenza vuole dare a coach J.B. Bickerstaff una squadra molto competitiva, in modo fale da fare meglio del primo turno dei playoffs raggiunto quest’anno.
Caris LeVert, che nella scorsa stagione ha trovato un buon minutaggio nelle rotazioni di Bickerstaff (30.2 minuti giocati a parita), ha accettato un contratto di due anni a 32 milioni di dollari, come riportato da Associated Press. LeVert si è dimostrato essere un uomo molto valido per il gioco dei Cavs, trovando una media di 12.1 punti, 3.8 rimbalzi e 3.9 assist. Un uomo molto buono da affiancare a giocatori già sviluppati come Donovan Mitchell e Jarrett Allen.
A Cleveland va anche Georges Niang. Per lui un triennale da 26 milioni di dollari. Niang, che ha giocato le ultime due stagioni con i Philadelphia 76ers, si riunirà a Cleveland con Mitchell, suo ex compagno di squadra per tre stagioni agli Utah Jazz. Niang porta poi esperienza nel roster. Basti solo pensare alla sua grande esperienza nei playoffs, avendo giocato 46 partite nella post-season. Per lui nell’ultima stagione il tabellino ha recitato 8.2 punti, 2.4 rimbalzi e 1.0 assist.
L’esperienza è l’elemento chiave della prima giornata di free agency per i Cavs. Alla Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse arriva anche Max Strus dai Miami Heat. ESPN riporta infatti che Strus si è accordato con i Cleveland Cavaliers per un contratto quadriennale da 63 milioni di dollari via sign and trade. Nella trade a tre squadre, gli Heat ottengono una seconda scelta e gli Spurs acquisiscono Cedi Osman, Lamar Stevens e una seconda scelta.
Il general manager dei Cavs Koby Altman ha giurato di non voler fare cambiamenti radicali dopo la sorprendente uscita di Cleveland dal primo turno dei playoffs. Altman, tuttavia, ha affrontato alcune necessità importanti per i Cavs, che hanno posto fine alla loro prolungata assenza nella postseason prima di essere estromessi dai New York Knicks nei playoffs. C’è quindi volontà di tornare subito in alto per i Cavaliers, che adesso devono costruire solide fondamenta.
